Paint-On Teeth Whitening Gel
Some things to always remember
No matter what process you use at home, you should first consult a dentist, who would advise you on the process that is safest for you to use.
Pregnant or nursing mothers are advised to avoid teeth bleaching/whitening since no one knows what effect ingesting the bleaching agent would have on a fetus or baby.
What is a paint-on teeth whitener?
This is a relatively new category of teeth whiteners. Using a small paintbrush or a pen-like applicator the bleaching gel is ‘painted’ onto the surface of each tooth. After a few minutes the paint-on gel solidifies into a barely visible film. A unique feature of paint-on teeth whiteners is that you can be selective as to which teeth to whiten.

Is it easy to apply a paint-on teeth whitener?
The application of paint-on teeth whiteners appears easy, but can be awkward. You have to dry your teeth, apply the ‘paint,’ and ensure the gel is evenly applied to the entire surface of each tooth! This can be a time-consuming task.
What bleaching agent is used in paint-on teeth whitening gels?
Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are the common bleaching agents, but some have sodium percarbonate peroxide.
How long does it take before results can be seen?
You can expect to see results in about two weeks.
How often should the paint-on whitener be used and for how long?
The paint is usually applied 1 or 2 times a day and is kept on for between 30 minutes and a few hours. Some are best applied at bedtime and left on all night.
Is there anything else I need to know about using paint-on whiteners?
You should minimize rinsing, eating, and drinking. You should also try to minimize any friction created by your lips and tongue with the tooth surfaces on which the whitening product has been applied.
How is the paint-on gel removed?
Some paint-on gels will dissolve over time. Others can be removed by just brushing it off using your toothbrush.
How much does it cost?
Costs range between $30 and $90 a pack.
What are the advantages of using paint-on teeth whitening gels?
- Paint-on teeth whiteners can be selectively applied to individual teeth, so you can obtain relatively even whitening.
- They are easy to use.
- They are quite inexpensive.
What are the disadvantages of using paint-on teeth whitening gels?
- These are not for serious bleaching.
- The surface must be clean and dry for the bleach to adhere. You would need to brush your teeth first and then dry them either with a washcloth or hair dryer.
- The teeth should remain dry during the entire period the paint-on gel is in place. If it gets wet [e.g., through contact with saliva] some parts could rub off, resulting in uneven whitening.
- It may not stay long enough on the tooth’s surface to provide effective whitening results.
- Can be awkward and time-consuming to apply.
- As with most other whitening agents, has no effect on dental work.
How effective are paint-on teeth whiteners?
Paint-on teeth whiteners are not as effective as whitening strips or trays. This is because the bleaching agents are more diluted, the paint-on product can be easily dislodged, or the treatment process is not long enough to produce a drastic change.
What are the side effects of paint-on teeth whitening gels?
As with other bleaching methods, the most common side effects are gum irritation and teeth sensitivity. If either occurs, please consult your dentist.
How to use paint-on teeth whitening gels
Just like how you paint your fingernails with nail polish, you paint each tooth using the applicator that comes with the pack.
Caveat
All teeth whitening products are not categorized as drugs by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), therefore it does not regulate these products.
